Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers Wildlife Education: What Are Some Of The Symptoms Of A Sick Rodent?

There are two types of rodents that the average person may encounter, and they are wild rodents or domesticated, pet rodents. Either kind may become sick. You should never approach a wild rodent that is acting abnormally, because it is likely to be sick.

Rabies
Rabies is probably the most commonly known and feared animal disease. Signs that an animal has rabies can include abnormal behavior, aggressiveness, unusual friendliness and lack of fear, and foaming at the mouth. Never allow a potentially rabid rodent to get near you. Call a local animal control professional or the state wildlife department and report the animal. They will take care of it in a safe manner.

Digestive Problems
Even rodents can have an upset tummy, or worse. Signs that a rodent has a digestive tract disorder can include loss of appetite, weight loss, and rumpled fur. Diarrhea may or may not be present.

Viral Infections
Some of the symptoms that a rodent has a viral infection can be weight loss and watery diarrhea. Any time you see a rodent with diarrhea, you should stay away from it, because it is likely to be sick.

Bacterial Infections
This type of infections is rather uncommon in pet mice, but they can occur in research or breeding colonies. Symptoms can include dehydration, lethargy, loss of appetite, watery diarrhea, and rumpled fur.

Lung Disorders
Respiratory problems are common in mice kept as pets. Signs of respiratory illness may include difficulty breathing, sneezing and sniffling, and runny nose.

Skin Problems
This is a common disorder among pet mice. Often the cause is mites or other parasites, or a cage mate chewing on the fur of another mouse. This is known as barbering. Signs that a rodent has a skin disorder will include matted or rough fur, and patches were the fur is missing.

Staphylococcus Infection
This is a bacterial infection found on most rodents and animals. It occurs when the rodent’s skin is damaged by biting or scratching. You will see inflamed skin, sores on the neck and head, and tumors on the head and face.

Ringworm
Ringworm is easily identifiable by its crusty rings on the skin. Often the rings are about the size of a dime or nickel. Loss of hair can occur. Ringworm is caused by the fungi dermatophytes that are parasites that burrow just under the skin. It is contagious to humans.
